A pedestrian hit by a car in central Hamilton has died.
Emergency services were called to the collision on Ulster St, near the intersection with Victoria St, about 11.40am on Tuesday.
Police were advised of a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian on the corner of Victoria and Ulster Sts at 11.38am, a police media spokesperson said
The man, 82, suffered critical injuries and was taken to Waikato Hospital.
He later died in hospital, Waikato road policing Inspector Jeff Penno said.
An investigation was underway and police were still investigatingwith the driver to figure out the chain of events.
A woman in her 50s was driving the silver Toyota Yaris involved within the crash.
The crash happened near a pedestrian crossing, but the witness was unclear about whether the person was in it at the time of the accident.
One person has critical injuries and was transported to Waikato Hospital by ambulance.
Brittney Benn , who works at the nearby accountancy firm PKF Hamilton, said she was getting a coffee at a close-by cafe and didn’t see the collision, but was alerted soon after by the arrival of police and an ambulance.
“I was sitting outside the cafe and idid not realise what had happened until I heard the sirens.”
The struck man, who was partially obscured from her view, had a head injury.
He had been struck by a Toyota Yaris being driven by a lady , the impact smashing the windscreen of the vehicle.
“The police got there very, very fast. Within minutes. it wasone of the unmarked cars, one of the undercover cars, that got there first.”
