Virgin Media O2’s 5 money-saving tips for 6m Brits doing common thing | Personal Finance | Finance
As millions of Britons prepare to celebrate Christmas overseas, Virgin Media O2 has shared practical tips to help travellers avoid unnecessary mobile costs during the festive season.
Data from O2 reveals that over two million customers spent Christmas abroad in December 2023, a 48% increase from 2022’s record of 1.4 million. This upward trend is set to continue, with an estimated six million Britons planning to travel abroad this Christmas.
Spain topped the list of destinations in 2023, attracting 20% of festive travellers, followed by Ireland (13%), France (12%), and Italy (4%). Meanwhile, 650,000 adventurers travelled further afield, with the USA (6%), Australia (3%), and UAE (2%) among the most popular long-haul destinations.
However, without proper planning, festive travellers risk incurring costly roaming charges. Christian Hindennach, chief commercial officer at Virgin Media O2, said: “The festive period can be an expensive time, so no one needs the additional burden of unwanted roaming costs.”
To help, Virgin Media O2 has shared five essential tips to prepare this Christmas.
Check in for Christmas holidays
Before jetting off, holidaymakers are encouraged to check if their mobile plan includes roaming to avoid unexpected charges.
Mobile customers may be able to adjust their data allowance, making it key to contact providers ahead of time to see if anything can be offered.
O2 notes that customers on its network can benefit from EU roaming in 43 destinations at no extra cost (up to 25GB).
Set a spending cap
A great way to manage mobile usage while abroad is to set a spending cap, according to O2. This allows customers to monitor their mobile expenses and avoid exceeding their budget.
Don’t forget to download
To avoid running out of data on travels, holidaymakers should download their entertainment in advance.
By downloading festive films and shows ahead of time, travellers can enjoy content during flights or trips without using data.
Stay protected
Keeping devices protected from viruses is essential, especially when away from your home network.
O2 suggested avoiding connecting to unknown WiFi networks while at the airport or out and about as they can potentially compromise the device.
Feliz Navi-gate
For those exploring new destinations, O2 recommends downloading the route before leaving the accommodation. This way, travellers can avoid using mobile data while navigating their surroundings, ensuring they stay connected without worrying about roaming charges.
