British tourist in shock as he discovers supermarket prices in Spain | Travel News | Travel

A British tourist has expressed his shock at the low cost of food in Spanish supermarkets while on holiday in La Línea de la Concepción, a town in the province of Cádiz, Andalusia. Cavan O’Grady, who was visiting the area to celebrate his mother’s 63rd birthday, couldn’t believe how much cheaper food was compared to in the UK. While shopping at Carrefour in Spain, Cavan known as Cav, was struck by the stark contrast in prices.

“Spanish supermarkets are a different level”, he captioned the TikTok video, which has now garnered hundreds of thousands of views. His experience comes as UK grocery price inflation climbs to its highest level in 16 months, pushing more British shoppers toward supermarket own-brand products to save money.

According to market research firm Kantar, annual price growth rose to 4.7% in the four weeks leading up to mid-June, up from 4.1% the previous month, marking the steepest increase since February 2024.

He said in the video: “TikTok, I’m going to tell you something, Spain knows how to do it in these supermarkets.

“First of all, the place is absolutely massive. It’s unreal how fresh all this stuff looks, you’re just not getting this back home.

“This would make you want to eat like a king out here. And do you know what, price-wise, it’s so much cheaper here than it is back home.”

He said that this is another “win” for Spain and described the supermarket as being “absolutely massive” and said it was “unreal how fresh” all the food was, including vegetables and meat.

He added: “Spain knows how to do it in these supermarkets.”

One local wrote: “Thank you very much for saying what no one ever says, there is good agriculture, livestock, fishing, we have everything in our country.”

Cav also told What’s The Jam: “It showed me how we’re getting absolutely had on products in the UK.

“I was genuinely overwhelmed by the quality and prices on offer in that Spanish supermarket.”
