‘Hidden’ southern Spanish town has ‘best beaches’ and waterfall | Travel News | Travel
If you are travelling to Spain this summer, an adventure lover insists that you visit this incredible waterfall location with clear blue waters, wondrous caves and fun kayak rides. Malaga has been a popular holiday spot since the 1960s thanks to its historical sites, vibrant neighbourhoods and busy nightlife.
Plus, not far from the city lies the popular party spot of Marbella. However, one traveller insists that there is one underrated spot that people.
Just a 50-minute drive from Malaga Airport lies Nerja, a beautiful town surrounded by some of the best beaches you will find in Spain. If you want to escape the busy party scene, this spot is less touristy, has some stunning walking spots and offers plenty of charm. Hidden between the cliffs is the Maro Waterfall or Cascada de Maro.
After visiting recently, travel lover Helena dubbed it a “hidden gem to your Malaga itinerary”. You can take a kayak or boat road to see the beautiful waterfall. It lies within the shoreline of the village of Maro and 3km from Nerja departing from the Burriana Beach.
Travel Choreography states: “This waterfall is one of the most enchanting natural wonders in the whole region.” Not only will you be able to explore the waterfall, but admire the dramatic cliffs and the amazing Maro cove.
Helena, who shared a video showing the beauty spot on her TikTok page @travelwithhelena, said: “Hidden between the cliffs of southern Spain, Maro Waterfall is only accessible by kayak or boat – and totally worth the paddle. The closest place to hire kayaks and access the waterfall is Maro Beach or you can take a guided tour from Burriana Beach in Nerja.”
Explaining her experience, Helena added: “We we staying in Malaga and we had a car so drove there, we parked at the car park at the top of the hill then there is a bus for three euros return to take you down or you can walk 15 mins down and back up but very steep! We just went straight down to Maro beach and hired kayaks and took ourselves there.”
Commenting on the post, one individual said: “This place looks so dreamy and magical!”. “Wow, so beautiful,” observed another.
“This looks insane! I need to visit here!,” added another. One other said: “Wow, didn’t know about this little gem.” “What an amazing place, love it,” wrote another.
How to get there
There is a shuttle bus service to get from Malaga Airport to Nerja which runs approximately hourly. The Malaga Airport Bus Stop is in Terminal 3, just as you walk out of the Arrivals hall. To get you right to the beach, you can then take a taxi or there are also direct buses from Nerja to Maro each day. There may be fewer direct services available on weekends or holidays.
You can also take a 45 to 50 minute taxi ride from Malaga Airport to Nerja but you can expect to pay around €78 for a taxi for four passengers, and higher prices incur for a minibus service.
If you have hired a car, from Malaga take the A-7 highway heading east and follow the signs towards Almuñécar. After passing Nerja you will see signs guiding you to Maro. There are parking areas near the beach.
