‘Prettiest’ UK town has ancient castle and beautiful coast | Travel News | Travel
A charming town in Wales, recently voted as one of the happiest places to live, is also one of the prettiest places to visit. Caernarfon in Gwynedd was voted by the Guardian to be the third happiest to live in the UK and one visit will show you why.
Located on the northwest coast just across from Anglesey Island this small town is home to just under 10,000 people. It’s best known for Caernarfon Castle, a truly awe inspiring building which looms over the harbour. Built in the 11th century under the instruction of King Edward 1, this amazing castle is world famous for being one of the best buildings of the Middle Ages.
Today, it’s open to the public and perfect for a day of exploring. The castle has exhibitions, museums and of course, a gift shop, perfect for picking up mementoes of your trip.
The castle might be its claim to fame, but this charming village has so much more to offer than history.
The high street is packed with shopping streets, and of course, you can’t miss the colourful Caernarfon Harbour.
One of the best things to do on a weekend trip here is to take a boat tour. These leave from the harbour and offer incredible views of not only the castle but also Snowdonia and the Isle of Anglesey.
Another fabulous day trip is to take a trip to Anglesey Island and head to Traeth Llanddyn.
This beautiful Blue Flag beach is a beautiful stretch of sand that is perfect for a leisurely stroll. You can walk along the beach to the lighthouse – just make sure you keep an eye out for the tide so you don’t get trapped.
If you are visiting with little ones, then you can’t miss a trip out to Gypsy Wood Park where fairies hide round every corner.
Kids can search for fairies, pet ponies and ride the miniature railway and adults can enjoy the stunning scenery and wetlands of the area.
All in all, Caernafon makes for an incredible weekend away for people of all ages – and it’s easy ti see why it’s one of the UK’s happiest places.
