Where is Frankenstein on Netflix filmed? | Films | Entertainment
Frankenstein, which finally arrived on Netflix today, is already being hailed as one of the most visually breathtaking films of the year – and fans across Scotland and England might just recognise some of the scenery. Guillermo Del Toro’s epic adaptation of Mary Shelley’s iconic horror story previously made its debut in cinemas, but now Netflix viewers are able to enjoy it at home on the small screen.
Widely considered to be the first ever science fiction novel, Frankenstein follows a genius but self-centred inventor who creates a new lifeform out of different body parts from various corpses.
In the 2025 adaptation, Oscar Isaac stars in the titular role, while the creature is played by Jacob Elordi.
The Netflix synopsis for Frankenstein reads: “A brilliant but egotistical scientist brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.”
The film has already been praised by countless critics for its stunning cinematography, but what fans might not realise is that many of its filming locations are across the UK.
Stirling, Scotland
One iconic Scottish landmark used as a filming location for the Netflix film is Stirling’s Wallace Monument, which also served as the inspiration behind Victor Frankenstein’s laboratory.
It caught the eye of Del Toro when he visited the Scottish city with his production team in 2023, and they ended up using it in the design of Frankenstein Tower.
East Lothian, Scotland
Gosford House, a neo-classical mansion based in East Lothian, was used for the exterior of the Frankenstein estate.
The house’s two-tier Marble Hall, complete with large columns and a grand staircase, is also prominently featured in the Netflix film.
Edinburgh, Scotland
Locals in Edinburgh were amazed as film crews descended onto Parliament Square, taking the iconic area around the Royal Mile and St Giles’ Cathedral back in time to film scenes for Frankenstein.
Aberdeenshire, Scotland
Dunecht House, a privately owned property based in Aberdeenshire, opened its doors for Del Toro and his crew.
The estate reportedly allowed filming to take place in one of its rooms with a tall, vaulted ceiling, which is transformed into the library where Victor Frankenstein studies under his father in the movie.
Glasgow, Scotland
The stunning medieval cathedral, which welcomes over 500,000 visitors each year, temporarily closed its doors to the public for filming.
The Glasgow landmark is “the only Scottish medieval cathedral to have survived the Reformation largely intact”, according to a Church of Scotland spokesman.
Lincolnshire, England
Situated in Lincolnshire, Burghley House was also reportedly used to film scenes in Frankenstein.
Several rooms, including the Great Hall and Bow Room, are said to feature in the gothic epic.
Wiltshire, England
One of Frankenstein’s most recognisable filming locations is Wilton House, which has been used in copious period dramas including The Crown, Bridgerton and Sense and Sensibility.
The estate located in Wiltshire includes a stunning 60-foot-long Double Cube Room, which was used to depict part of Frankenstein’s grand estate.
Frankenstein is available to stream now on Netflix.
