‘Frightening’ snooker wonderkid, 14, makes history ahead of showdown | Other | Sport

Snooker prodigy Michal Szubarczyk has made history yet again with victory in the IBSF World Championship this week. The 14-year-old claimed a 5-2 victory in the final in Qatar over Ali Alobaidli to become the second-youngest ever to win the event.

Szubarczyk has been tipped for a bright future for some time, with the teenager recently working alongside seven-time world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan during a tournament in China. Now, at the age of 14, Szubarczyk will now prepare to feature in the UK Championship later this month, where he will take on Jimmy White. The first-round clash of the tournament will see Szubarczyk take on White, a six-time World Championship finalist, who is 49 years older than him.

It was back in 1980 that White also won the IBSF World Championship, with Szubarczyk now following in his footsteps. Stuart Bingham, Mark Allen, Ken Doherty and Yan Bingtao have also won the IBSF title in the early stages of their respective careers, too.

It was earlier this month that Szubarczyk was spotted working alongside O’Sullivan in a training session during the International Championship in China. O’Sullivan worked with Szubarczyk despite being knocked out of the tournament in Nanjing in the third round.

Szubarczyk is currently ranked at No.101 in the world rankings and already has titles at Under-16 and Under-18 level under his belt, as well as the recent victory in Qatar.

It was in March of this year that three-time World Champion and 2025 finalist Mark Williams tipped Szubarczyk to have a bright future in snooker. Williams even compared the talent at a young age from Szubarczyk to O’Sullivan.

“I was in Turkey watching the Europeans. I watched a young boy there and came back and told everyone in the club that this is one of the best 14-year-olds I’ve ever seen in my life,” Williams told the Metro earlier this year.

“Up there with O’Sullivan, maybe not as good, but not far away. Every time I watched him he was knocking in 80s, 90s, 100s. It was frightening.”
