A ‘hidden gem’ island has been named as the ‘perfect for escaping the cold UK winter’. Travel blogger Elie, who posts on TikTok under the username @travelswithels, thinks La Gomera is the ideal choice for a winter sun holiday.

Posting on social media, the travel enthusiast recommended the beautiful destination, which is one of the smallest of the main Canary Islands and neighbours Tenerife. In her video, Elie claimed: “I’m currently in the only place in Europe that’s still hot and sunny, and that’s because it’s actually next to Africa.

“You’ve probably heard of the main Canary Islands, like Tenerife and Gran Canaria, but have you heard of this little island called La Gomera?”

She continued: “I hadn’t heard of it before coming here, and after being here for two weeks, I feel like it’s such a hidden gem, and I have to tell you about it.

“It has got beaches with crystal blue waters. The whole island is covered in mountains. There’s multiple national parks and even trail hikes. I definitely recommend staying in San Sebastián.

“It’s such a beautiful little town. I’ve been staying in a place called Cactus co-living, which I definitely recommend if you’re a digital nomad. It’s also super easy to get here.

“La Gomera is only a 45-minute ferry from Tenerife, so if you’re planning to visit Tenerife, you should definitely get the ferry and add La Gomera to your itinerary too!”

The video went viral, racking up 12k views and hundreds of likes. While commenters pointed out there are other choices for holidaymakers seeking a sunny European getaway, viewers were nonetheless impressed.

Reacting to the video, one commenter said: “Not heard of it but looks gorgeous! Love the Canary Islands.” Elie replied: “They’re the best.” Someone else wrote: “Greece and Turkey are almost very sunny.” Elie agreed, writing: “Oooo yeah that’s true!”

According to TUI, La Gomera typically sees weather ranging between 18°C and 24°C in November, with around six hours of sunshine per day and 68% humidity.

The travel and tourism business says: “In November, La Gomera, Spain, experiences mild weather characterised by moderate temperatures and occasional rainfall. Visitors can enjoy pleasant conditions, perfect for outdoor pursuits, though it’s advisable to be prepared for varying weather, especially if planning outdoor exploration.”

The weather in December drops a few degrees, ranging from 18°C to 22°C, but it’s still suitable for hiking and sightseeing. TUI explains: “In December, La Gomera offers pleasantly mild weather that is generally conducive to outdoor exploration. Expect daytime temperatures to be comfortably warm, making it suitable for hiking and sightseeing. Rain can be occasional but typically does not deter outdoor plans. The island presents a unique blend of sun and occasional showers, perfect for experiencing local seasonal highlights.”
