Netflix adapting ‘simply exquisite’ crime thriller novel from ‘great’ author | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Netflix has unveiled a gripping new thriller starring Gangs of London’s Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù, based on a bestselling crime novel, following the success of one thriller leading to audiences losing sleep and a show with a Succession star, reports the Mirror.

S.A. Cosby’s acclaimed novel All the Sinners Bleed is being transformed into a television series by Netflix.

Set in the Deep South, the narrative centres on Titus Crown (portrayed by Dìrísù), the county’s first black sheriff, who finds himself pursued by a serial killer.

Whilst attempting to hunt down the murderer, Crown grapples with the traumatic loss of his devoutly religious mother. The killer has been systematically targeting the African American residents of Charon County, Virginia for years, claiming to act in the name of God.

Will Crown apprehend the perpetrator before another life is taken?

The streaming service has revealed the upcoming series will run for nine episodes and boasts an impressive ensemble cast, featuring Disclaimer’s Leila George, All American’s Daniel Ezra, The Gilded Age’s John Douglas Thompson, The White Lotus’ Murray Bartlett, The Morning Show’s Nicole Beharie, and On My Block’s Andrea Cortés.

Joe Robert Cole, the screenwriter behind Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, has penned the adaptation.

Speaking about joining All the Sinners Bleed, Cole remarked: “The specificity of the world S.A. Cosby created truly swept me away, and Titus Crown seized my heart.”

Executive production duties are being handled by Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions, working alongside Amblin Television and novelist Cosby. In fact, All the Sinners Bleed was previously featured on former US President Obama’s summer reading list.

Released in 2023, All the Sinners Bleed earned widespread critical acclaim, being named by the Guardian as one of the year’s finest crime thrillers, whilst The Times crowned it thriller of the month and the Financial Times praised it as one of the Best New Crime Books.

Amazon reviewers have been singing the book’s praises, with one five-star review stating: “I was gripped from the first chapter” before adding: “Very refreshing to read a thriller from an African American perspective. I see a powerful Netflix series in the future!”

Another five-star review was headlined: “Hoping it’s first of a series, more please.”

The reviewer commented: “Excellent thriller, for fans of John Connolly and James Lee Burke; hope Netflix do it justice with the forthcoming series.”

A third glowing review proclaimed: “Simply exquisite. So brilliantly written. I cannot stress highly enough just how great SA Cosby’s prose is.

“The characters are multi layered and I deeply cared about their well being. That’s so rare in a thriller where normally plot overtakes any kind of character development. Titus is a gem and I won’t easily forget him.”

Another reader commented: “Boy that was an intense read. Cosby is fast becoming one of my favourite authors. His books are bleak, gritty, disturbing but splattered with memorable characters and great story telling and at the heart of them the worst and best of human nature.”
