Stephen King adaptation of dystopian classic hailed a ‘must see’ | Films | Entertainment

Another declared: “This was extremely entertaining! Would absolutely recommend watching you won’t regret it!”.

A third wrote: “Movie had some nostalgic moments from the 1980s running man that had me giggling.”

However, as the glowing reviews pour in, some cinema-goers may be questioning where they recognise the storyline from.

The Running Man draws from Stephen King’s 1982 novel bearing the identical title. The Running Man was originally published under the pen name Richard Bachman.

The novel was subsequently transformed into a 1987 cinema release featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger as Ben Richards.

This month marks the arrival of a fresh adaptation, helmed by director Edgar Wright. It is said that Wright’s adaptation resembles the original novel more than the 1987 version, which has gone down well with fans.

A film synopsis reads: “In a near-future society, The Running Man is the top-rated show on television – a deadly competition where contestants, known as Runners, must survive 30 days while being hunted by professional assassins, with every move broadcast to a bloodthirsty public and each day bringing a greater cash reward.

“Desperate to save his sick daughter, working-class Ben Richards (Glen Powell) is convinced by the show’s charming but ruthless producer, Dan Killian (Josh Brolin), to enter the game as a last resort.

“But Ben’s defiance, instincts, and grit turn him into an unexpected fan favorite – and a threat to the entire system. As ratings skyrocket, so does the danger, and Ben must outwit not just the Hunters, but a nation addicted to watching him fall.”
