Horror film fans say has ‘very disturbing ending’ on TV tonight | Films | Entertainment
Horror fans can expect to see a whole load of frights on their screens tonight as this “well-crafted” 2022 film airs on Film4.
Tune in to your TVs tonight if you’re hoping to see Men, an A24 surrealist folk horror that has rave reviews from fans of the genre. First released in 2022, this film made waves with its unusual concept and British village setting, with two actors at the centre of all of its creepiness.
A viewer took to Rotten Tomatoes to describe the horror as “very unsettling” with a “disturbing ending”. Meanwhile, another person wrote that the film is “transfixing on so many levels”.
The story follows Harper, who is grieving the recent loss of her husband and retreats to a secluded countryside manor for a holiday in hopes of a break from her devastating reality. Although, once she arrives, she is continuously stalked and tormented by unusual men in the village – all played by the same British actor, Rory Kinnear.
The film sets out to create a surreal nightmare, symbolising the trauma she has experienced and that all women experience as a result of the patriarchy. Its climax introduces us to a figure known as the Green Man, who births a long chain of men who have harassed her, including her late husband.
A rave review reads: “The movie is a surrealist take on being able to overcome grief and trauma, along with a critique on toxic masculinity. It definitely has some good jump scares and a lot of suspense. Would give it a try for sure.”
Although others have struggled to come to terms with the intense gendered themes of the horror. One person said: “On the one hand, I think Men is really well crafted, and the story is well told… but on the other hand, this very story suffers from the not very subtle message of toxic masculinity and the clumsy attempt to incorporate it in a folkloristic way. Unfortunately, this wastes a lot of potential.”
One viewer, however, couldn’t help but praise the director’s vision, writing: “Men brings Alex Garland’s creative and uncanny mind to full display. The film’s carefully chosen locations, combined with exceptional sound design and Garland’s impeccable directing, create an atmosphere that is both immersive and deeply unsettling.”
They continued to point out the cast’s poignant part in the film, especially that of the two leads, Jessie Buckley, who plays Harper, and Rory Kinnear, who had the difficult job of playing multiple men in the movie. They claimed: “Jessie Buckley delivers an amazing performance in the lead role, beautifully conveying a sense of amiss. Rory Kinnear captivates audiences with his flawless portrayal of a complex and deeply disturbing character.”
Another impressed viewer wrote: “I love it; love the eeriness and the atmosphere! Super original.” In line with the film’s themes of gender, one person simply states, “Men will hate this film.” I loved it.”
To experience an unsettling horror that has you thinking overtime, you can tune in to Film4 tonight at 11:10pm to watch Men. Alternatively, the film is available to rent on both Amazon Prime and Apple TV.
