Christmas market is one of Europe’s biggest but most tourists miss it | Travel News | Travel
We’re familiar with the popular European Christmas markets in Germany, Austria or Denmark, but there’s one nestled in a colourful city that many don’t realise is there, and it’s one of the biggest.
Spanning around 280,000 square metres, with its twinkling lights, traditional wooden chalets, classic funfair rides, and festive decorations, is the Craiova Christmas Market. Found in south-west Romania, it’s said to be the largest in Europe as the city centre turns into a spectacular winter wonderland for merrymaking, and it’s nothing short of showstopping.
This year, the Christmas market is centred around the iconic story of the Nutcracker, with thousands of giant sweets and toy ornaments decorating the city to help bring the tale to life. Described as a “fairytale atmosphere”, millions of colourful, sparkling lights adorn buildings, Christmas trees, garlands, wreaths, pathways and every inch of the city centre.
Extravagant decorations are around every corner, with some said to have taken inspiration from fairies, giants and dolls for its fairytale charm. Just marvelling at this magical scene is enough to bring the festive cheer, let alone all the attractions and activities it has to offer.
Visitors can ride the panoramic Ferris wheel or the Christmas carousel, glide around the large ice rink, visit Santa’s village, and admire the flying Santa sleigh. There are wooden cabins filled with handmade gifts and decorations, while the aroma of spiced mulled wine and gingerbread fills the air.
This is any foodies dream as Craiova has been described as a “multicultural culinary metropolis”, taking influences from across Eastern Europe. You can expect flavours from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Greece, North Macedonia, Hungary, Ukraine, and Turkey, with favourites like grilled sausages and sweet chimney cake also available from the various stalls.
Taking place in the city from November 14 to January 4, this is an unforgettable experience not to be missed if you’re looking for that European winter getaway with some festive fun. Flights from London to Craiova, just over three hours long, start from around £41 during the lead-up to Christmas, while flights in January start from around £28.
If that isn’t enough to entice you for a trip, there could be a dusting of snow, as this part of Romania is prone to a traditional winter with that desirable white Christmas. That being said, it’s going to be nippy, so make sure to pack lots of layers, including a warm winter coat, hat, scarf, gloves, thick socks, and some cosy yet practical boots.
Locals and tourists have praised the Craiova Christmas Market as one wrote a glowing review: “One of the best Christmas Markets I have ever seen! Spread all over the Old Town, it has amazing lights, many food stalls and a carousel. The buildings are beautifully decorated. At 6:30 pm, Santa’s Sleigh appears in the sky and it is such a lovely show, especially for children. It is like a fairytale!”
A second shared: “Christmas Market was a fantastic experience! The food was delicious and offered great value, making it a perfect spot for families. The warm and welcoming atmosphere, coupled with the tasty wine, created a memorable dining experience.”
“One word – magical! The Craiova Christmas Market is absolutely stunning! The entire city centre transforms into a winter wonderland, with millions of twinkling lights creating a magical atmosphere. Highly recommended!” a third commented.
