Rashford sends Barcelona message as dream denied and concern raised | Football | Sport
The 68-cap England international reported for training ahead of Barcelona’s clash with Athletic Club, but was promptly sent home amid “serious concerns” regarding his well-being. Hansi Flick confirmed this was behind his absence, though Barcelona still delivered a commanding 4-0 La Liga triumph.
The victory unfolded before a capacity crowd at the transformed Camp Nou, with the inaugural match there representing a dream scenario for most footballers. Rashford was cruelly denied that opportunity, but appears poised for an imminent return following his latest fitness update.
The forward turned to social media on Sunday, sharing a photograph of himself back in Barcelona training gear. On Instagram, his caption read: “Feeling better and back with the team.”
It’s encouraging news for Rashford, who will be eager to secure his place in the starting XI when Barca take on Chelsea in the Champions League on Tuesday night. The England star boasts an impressive track record against the Premier League giants from his United days.
In 21 games against Chelsea, he has achieved seven wins, eight draws, and six losses, while consistently troubling their defence. Rashford has netted six times and provided five assists in those meetings, which included a spectacular free-kick back in 2019.
Another strong showing from the United ace could see him build upon that remarkable record, while securing the bragging rights over a Premier League rival. Naturally, there’s a sentiment among many fans, who would prefer to witness such displays while wearing a United shirt rather than representing another side.
Wayne Rooney certainly shares that view. Speaking on his podcast with the BBC last month, the United legend said: “I’d much prefer to see him do that for Man Utd, if I’m honest.
“But no, listen, I don’t think it was the easiest start, the first couple of games, and there were people talking about him, but he’s got his head down, he’s doing well, he’s playing well, and for any young English player, and especially someone you know and you want to do well, it’s great to see that.
“Listen, Marcus Rashford at his best is a top, top player and that’s what we all want to see and just hope he stays settled and he keeps performing, keeps working and if he does that then I don’t think there’s any doubt about his ability. And you know what, I think fair play to Thomas Tuchel for bringing him in [for England] and playing him, as well.”
Where Rashford’s future lies beyond this campaign remains uncertain, with an option to buy clause written into his loan deal at the Camp Nou. Nevertheless, should that fail to materialise, then it’s unclear whether a pathway back to Old Trafford exists or if a departure elsewhere becomes inevitable.
