Wicked prequel announced days after sequel and fans have same plea | Films | Entertainment

Fans of Wicked have received thrilling news with the announcement that Gregory Maguire, author of the original Wicked novel, is releasing a prequel titled Galinda: A Charmed Childhood.

The New York Times bestselling author, who penned Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, has revealed the prequel will arrive in autumn 2026.

The narrative promises to explore Glinda’s backstory before her time as Elphaba’s famous roommate at Shiz University. Whilst plot details are still under wraps, the 256-page book is scheduled for release on September 29, 2026.

Following the announcement, Wicked enthusiasts have urged that actress Ariana Grande, who portrayed Glinda in the acclaimed Wicked films, should narrate the audiobook version.

Beneath an X, formerly Twitter, post announcing the news, many supporters argued it would be entirely appropriate for the 32-year-old performer to reprise the character in her debut audiobook, reports the Mirror US.

One enthusiast posted: “Can we have Ariana narrating the audiobook please?” Another supporter responded: “I WOULD JUST DIE WTF YEEESSSSSS.”

Whilst a third added: “Ariana narrating the audiobook wbk [we been knew].”

Yet another fan penned: “I fear this might be another cash grab I’ll be falling for.”

While someone else gushed:”Definitely be getting this to finish my Wicked collection.” And another chimed in with: “I trust Gregory Maguire to do amazing work!”

However, not all Wicked enthusiasts were as optimistic about the prequel, having been left underwhelmed by the previous novel exploring Elphie’s life.

A sceptic on Reddit shared: “I love Wicked but I just do not care about Glinda’s childhood. Sorry, Gregory Maguire.”

A second reader agreed: “Considering how disappointing Elphie’s book was I’m not all that excited for it.”

While a third wrote: “Yeah, his books are unbelievably dull.”

And a fourth quipped: “You’ve gotta hand it to our man, he’s not gonna turn down that bag.”

Maguire is renowned for his works such as Wicked, Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, After Alice, and numerous other novels for both adults and children. The 71-year-old author often draws inspiration from classic children’s tales.

His debut novel, The Lightning Time, was published back in 1978.
