A 17-year-old student was discovered dead Tuesday morning at a public high school in Bordeaux. The teenager was found unresponsive in the courtyard of Lycee Michel-Montaigne shortly after 7am by staff, according to regional newspaper Sud Ouest.

Emergency services were called immediately, but paramedics were unable to revive him and he was pronounced dead at the scene, in the Chartrons district. Police secured the area and have opened an investigation to determine the circumstances of the death.

No official information has been released regarding the cause of death, and the inquiry remains ongoing. An autopsy has been scheduled.

The lycee, which has around 1,500 students, activated its psychological support unit, with counsellors made available to students and staff throughout the day.

In a brief statement sent to parents and cited by both outlets, the school administration confirmed the death of a student and expressed deep sadness.

The City of Bordeaux also issued condolences and stated it was providing support to the school community.

Journalists gathered outside the entrance on Tuesday morning as police maintained a perimeter around the courtyard.

The newspaper published photographs of the secured site and described a heavy atmosphere among students and teachers.

As of Tuesday evening, no further details had been disclosed by the Bordeaux public prosecutor’s office or police.
