Newcastle and Marseille fans clash in street as tear gas thrown in scary scenes | Football | Sport

Newcastle and Marseille fans clashed on the streets of France ahead of the two teams’ Champions League match tonight. The Ligue 1 side will host the Premier League giants in a European league phase showdown this evening (Tuesday).

Newcastle will take to the pitch at the Orange Velodrome stadium in search of their fourth Champions League win of the season, following victories over Union Saint-Gilloise, Benfica and Athletic Club. The hosts, meanwhile, will be looking for only their second win of the competition, with their only win thus far coming against Ajax at the end of September.

According to The Sun, there were violent clashes on the streets of Marseille. And one group of Newcastle fans were targeted with tear gas at a bar.

Online clips on social media have shown brawls in the street, with fighting breaking out despite a 1,000-strong presence from local police.

And the authorities will use drones to patrol Marseille’s city centre and the area around the stadium to spot signs of trouble ahead of kick-off.

One clip on social media showed a number of people punching and kicking each other. And the footage was shared along with the caption: “Streetfight Marseille vs Newcastle”.

The Chronicle have reported that Newcastle fans were given a mixed reception on their arrival in Marseille on Monday evening, with some locals sharing a drink and singing a song with them.

But some travelling Magpies supporters were understood to have been targeted by a small pocket of Marseille fans.

Ahead of the trip to France, Newcastle told their fans: “Supporters are strongly advised by French police not to visit the Old Port (Vieux Port) area of Marseille during their stay.

“For safety measures, supporters are advised not to wear anything that will identify themselves as Newcastle United supporters or congregate in large groups on the evening of Monday 24th November or all day on Tuesday 25th November.”

And the club also explained: “Street crime, including pickpocketing can take place in Marseille. Supporters should be vigilant at all times, take sensible precautions and ensure they have valid travel insurance.

“Supporters should not hang flags or any items of club colours in the city of Marseille.”

Meanwhile, Newcastle United Supporters Club issued instructions to supporters ahead of kick-off as they stated: “Matchday, and we are away to Marseille.

“Kick-off is at 8pm GMT, 9pm local time. Hoping to continue our great Champions League form and follow on from our victory against Man City at the weekend. If you’re in Marseille, we’ll see you at Place de la Joilette later.”
