PS5 plummets to £289 as Argos cuts £140 off price | Gaming | Entertainment
Shoppers are rushing to get their hands on the PlayStation 5 after discounts brought it down to historically low prices. The recent price cuts – in line with Black Friday discounts – have seen the PS5 Digital Edition at £289.99, down from the regular price of £429.99.
The £140 discount at Argos on the popular gaming console will ease the burden on shoppers looking to get the latest gaming tech in their homes this Christmas.
The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition was originally launched alongside the version with a disc drive in 2020, rivalling the Xbox Series S, with estimations saying that the PS5 has outsold the Xbox in the battle of the consoles. It was updated in 2023 to the latest model.
The PS5 Digital Edition offers a slim design and is digital only, meaning that games have to be downloaded. There’s the option to add a disc drive as an accessory (£69.99) if buyers change their mind or want to switch to discs.
The PS5 is best known for its access to AAA titles like Call of Duty Black Ops 7, Battlefield 6 or EA Sports FC 26, but with the advantage of offering some of the best exclusive titles, such as Death Stranding, Gran Turismo and Marvel’s Spider-Man.
The Argos deal will land shoppers the PS5 Digital Edition with 825GB of storage. It comes with a DualSense controller, while the console itself supports gaming up to 4K at 120fps – if your TV supports it. For those wanting more storage, it’s easy to add a storage card inside, which takes less than 10 minutes and only needs a screwdriver.
Argos isn’t the only retailer that’s selling the PS5 at that price. Shoppers can get the PS5 direct from Sony for £294.99, which isn’t the cheapest around, but Amazon has it for £289 – a whole 99p cheaper – a price that Currys is also matching, so there are plenty of buying options.
Elsewhere, the Xbox Series S is available for slightly less, coming in at £269.99 on Amazon, a £30 reduction. While Xbox offers access to exclusives such as Halo, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Avowed and Fable, the cost to expand the storage is expensive compared to PS5, which is a slight disadvantage.
In 2025, PlayStation expanded the offering with the PS5 Pro, which is the new flagship console, offering more graphics power for better visuals. It also offers an AI upscaling solution to improve performance on lower-quality games, while it has more storage and better connectivity than the standard model. But the PS5 Pro costs £569.99, nearly double the price of the PS5 Digital Edition.
These Black Friday deals are expected to run until the end of the week, although PlayStation is listing the console at its price of £294.99 until 18 December, ideal for shoppers who miss cheaper deals.
Black Friday is serving up a whole host of treats, including some great deals on AirPods, discounts on iPad and MacBooks and a whole lot more.
