Tottenham player ratings vs Newcastle: Romero and 8/10 cools pressure | Football | Sport
Tottenham fought to a 2-2 draw against Newcastle in the Premier League on Tuesday evening. Spurs entered the match having secured only three victories from their last 13 games, following another disappointing performance against Fulham. They faced a Newcastle team in excellent form with seven wins from their last nine games, and St James’ Park has not been a favourable venue for the north London side in recent years.
The first half saw considerable pressure from Newcastle, with Joelinton striking the left-hand post with a low shot. Spurs managed to get a shot on target in the first half for the fourth consecutive game, but their performance improved after half-time, only to be dealt a blow on the 71st minute when Bruno Guimaraes scored from the edge of the box.
However, the reinstated Romero equalised for Spurs seven minutes later, diving in to head home Mohammed Kudus’ cross. However, the drama didn’t end there as referee Tom Bramall was directed to his monitor to review a tussle between Bentancur and Dan Burn, resulting in a penalty for the hosts, which Anthony Gordon confidently converted.
Romero wasn’t finished either, as he spectacularly scored with an overhead kick in the 94th minute, securing a draw for the north London team. Here are our Spurs player ratings…
Guglielmo Vicario
The travelling Spurs fans repeatedly chanted his name in the first half after an early low save from Miley. He made a good save from Barnes early in the second half but couldn’t get near Guimaraes’ curling shot on 70 minutes. 7.
Pedro Porro
Despite a hard-working performance, he put Spurs at risk with an early loose backheel and had some challenging moments down his flank. 6.
Cristian Romero
Returning from a suspension for accumulated yellow cards, he received a booking within 25 minutes here for a late challenge on Joelinton. Barnes got past him for the Newcastle man’s chance shortly after the break.
However, he turned the game around with a diving header and then an acrobatic overhead kick. His defending was inconsistent on the day, but he scored the goals the attackers couldn’t. 9.
Kevin Danso
He was Spurs’ best defender in the first half and headed Woltemade’s effort off the line after the break. He gave a solid performance throughout. 8.
Destiny Udogie
There were moments of carelessness mixed with some good runs, and like Porro on the other side, Newcastle found plenty of opportunities down the wings. Seemed to be limping towards the end. 6.
Pape Matar Sarr
Worked diligently in the centre of the pitch without much quality in his performance. 6.
Rodrigo Bentancur
Alternated between sloppy and good moments, and was treated harshly with the penalty decision. 6.
Mohammed Kudus
Delivered a fantastic cross from Romero to score his first goal and a low cross for Bergvall early on, but otherwise struggled to penetrate at times and put Spurs in a difficult position outside his own box on a couple of occasions. Gets a boost for the assist. 7.
Lucas Bergvall
Played in a number 10 role and excelled with his pressing around the pitch and tracking back. He flicked an effort over the bar from Kudus’ cross. 7.
Brennan Johnson
Made a few good runs in the first half that went unnoticed by Kudus or Porro. Made a goal line clearance from Livramento in the second half.
His touch wasn’t always accurate but he continued to try and stretch Newcastle’s defence. 6.
Randal Kolo Muani
Worked hard, pressed around the pitch and did the thankless tasks without reaping the rewards. 6.
Subs.
Richarlison
Came on and attempted to create problems up front. 6.
Xavi Simons
Tried to get the ball into the box as often as possible. 6.
Mathys Tel
Had some careless moments with the ball that infuriated Frank when Spurs were chasing the game. 5.
Archie Gray
Came on late in the match and made some crucial little touches. N/A.
Wilson Odobert
Failed to make a significant impact in the final moments. N/A.
