HMRC says ‘you must write to us’ over due tax payments | Personal Finance | Finance

HMRC has explained the rules to get a tax refund paid out to you. The department shared some guidance to clarify the rules after a query from a taxpayer.

The person contacted the authority as they were planning on writing a letter to HMRC to claim back some cash. They wanted to know which address they should send the letter to.

HMRC initially replied with details of two postal addresses the person may want to send the letter to. The second of these was for cases where the letter is being sent from an address “originating from outside UK”.

In response, the taxpayer explained their situation in more detail: “I stopped being a tax resident of the UK in October of 2023 and had a tax return for the fiscal year 2023/2024.

“I want to write a letter to HMRC from abroad to authorize HMRC to send the refund cheque to my nominee. Please confirm the correct postal address?”

HMRC confirmed that the person should send the letter to the second address provided. This address is:

HM Revenue & Customs

Benton Park View

Newcastle Upon Tyne

NE98 1ZZ

United Kingdom.

The adress to send your letter to if you are sending it from within the UK is:

Pay As You Earn and Self Assessment

HM Revenue and Customs

BX9 1AS

United Kingdom.

What details should I include in the letter?

HMRC also provided guidance about what details the person should put in their letter. The group said: “You must write to us with your nominee details in order for us to be able to deal with your repayment claim once we have received it.

“You will need to include your National Insurance Number, name, address, signature and the date your repayment amount and the year the repayment is for. You will also need to write to us with the name and address of the nominee to receive the replacement cheque.”
