World Darts Champs ace had to axe walk-on music as dancers complained | Other | Sport
Former darts world champion Glen Durrant was persuaded to alter his walk-on music by the PDC dancers. During his time competing in the BDO, Durrant made his entrance to the oche accompanied by the Perfecto Allstarz track Pigbag.
However, that created complications when he made the transition to the PDC, as the same tune was already being used by two-time world champion Adrian Lewis. Initially determined to retain the music, Durrant ultimately gave in after the female dancers who perform on stage during player entrances convinced him to reconsider. After losing his PDC Tour card, Durrant competed at the World Seniors Championship at the Lakeside, where he brought back Pigbag as his walk-on song.
He told darts YouTuber Matthew Edgar in 2022: “I’m in the Seniors in February and I’m back with Pigbag. Ady Lewis, who are you?!
“But do you know who made me change it most, the PDC dancers. When you’ve got four girls coming to you at breakfast and saying ‘Come on Glen, what’s all that about?’ I had to change it.”
Durrant’s decision to switch to the Robbie Williams classic, Angels, turned out to be a masterstroke, as it proved extremely popular with fans at major PDC tournaments.
He said: “It went unbelievably. One of the better walk-ons. I think I’ve had about 10 walk-ons [tunes] in the PDC.” However, Durrant once revealed in a post-match interview, after his quarter-final exit from the PDC World Championship, that he believes Angels is only fitting for grand occasions.
He said: “As far as I’m concerned, I’m only walking out to that at Alexandra Palace and the majors. You can’t play in front of 200 people in Germany with that.
“The reason it worked is because thousands of people are singing it. If I’m playing in front of a couple of hundred people at Leverkusen, I don’t think it works. I’d give my right arm for Pigbag.
“At Ally Pally, Angels definitely worked, but playing in front of a lot smaller crowd who don’t know that song, [it doesn’t work].”
As well as his three BDO world titles, Durrant’s finest moment was winning the Premier League in 2020. However, riddled with dartitis, a condition that sees players struggle to let go of the dart, he eventually lost his tour card before retiring from competitive darts.
While still playing on the exhibition circuit, Durrant’s focus has turned to coaching and his punditry career. He is on duty for Sky Sports at the current World Championship.
