Netflix’s answer to Interstellar leaves fans ‘emotionally wrecked’ | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV
Netflix subscribers have been left “dazzled” by a gripping new science fiction thriller that premiered this Friday (19th December).
Set in a dystopian future, this South Korean disaster film paints a grim picture of a world on the brink of submersion under a colossal flood.
As humanity teeters on the edge of extinction, a mother armed with a plan to save Earth battles against time and rising water levels in her apartment building to ensure her child’s survival.
A treat for K-drama enthusiasts, The Great Flood boasts a star-studded cast featuring Kim Da-mi of Itaewon Class fame and Park Hae-soo from Netflix’s smash hit Squid Game.
Since its release, the film has left audiences gasping for breath and, in some instances, reduced to tears by its harrowing tale of survival, reports <a href=”https://www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/netflix-thriller-squid-game-dazzling-36428367″ rel=”Follow” target=”_self”>the Mirror</a>.
One X user posted: “Just watched #TheGreatFlood ….I am ugly sobbing rn. Why is it so emotional!! Kim Dami’s choices are always masterclass!!”
Another viewer shared their immediate reaction after watching the film: “How are y’all? I feel like I wanna watch it again and again. kim dami as a mother was phenomenal!”
Yet another admitted: “watched the great flood on netflix since i was looking for films to watch while eating. anyway its not a good film to watch while eating but its a good film to watch if u want a good cry.”
The accolades poured in on Letterboxd, with one devoted viewer awarding the picture a perfect five stars, gushing: “The visuals were crazy in the best way. At first, it felt like The Day After Tomorrow, then it slowly shifted into Interstellar territory.
“Somewhere in the middle, it reminded me of Wonderland, and by the end, I kept thinking about Distant Sky. Every part of it clicked for me. I don’t say this lightly. This movie stayed with me after it ended.”
Meanwhile, another enthusiast declared it “Easily one of the best movies of 2025”.
Digital outlet Baap of Movies hailed the production as a “Korean Apocalypse That Dazzles, Divides, and Drifts into Dark Sci-Fi” in their glowing assessment.
The publication also commended its “bold” concepts and narrative leaps, highlighting its “daring” shifts in genre and a “stranger and more sinister” end result than audiences might anticipate.
The Guardian similarly described the sci-fi thriller as “sinister”, observing: “Making this sci-fi swerve, Kim [Byung-woo, director] has clearly heavily imbibed from Edge of Tomorrow, Charlie Kaufman’s mental mazes and perhaps also – with mega-tsunamis gathering on the horizon and the presiding maudlin-apocalyptic tone – Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar.”
Gulf News captured the overall sentiment perfectly: “If you enjoy genre-bending thrillers with high stakes, rising waters, and pulse-pounding suspense, The Great Flood is worth the dive.”
The Great Flood is available to stream on Netflix.
