Gerwyn Price issues statement after crashing out of World Darts Championship | Other | Sport
Gerwyn Price issued a statement following his shocking elimination from the World Darts Championship on Sunday. The former champion endured a surprise 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Wesley Plaisier at Alexandra Palace. It was particularly shocking, given that Price had been earmarked as a genuine contender to rival Luke Littler and Luke Humphries before the tournament began.
He managed an average of 95.83 and hit three 180s, but it wasn’t enough to stop Plaisier from delivering a comprehensive second-round whitewash. Taking to Instagram, the Welsh star wrote: “Absolutely gutted there had so much support which was amazing. Wesley was great at the right moments but I was way off it and it showed.
“Good luck to him and everyone else left on the tournament see you in 2026. Merry Christmas and a happy new year.”
Price had demolished Adam Gawlas in straight sets in his opening match and declared afterwards that he was confident of claiming the World Darts Championship for a second time.
But only five days later, his quest for glory reached an abrupt end with the Welshman suffering his earliest exit since his second-round loss to Nathan Aspinall in 2019.
Plaisier, who sits 92nd in the world rankings, has progressed to the third round and will now meet Poland’s top player Krzysztof Ratajski for a spot in the last 16.
Reflecting on his emotional triumph, the Dutchman declared: “I still can’t believe it. I’m so over the moon. My biggest victory ever, I think. I don’t know how I did it, but I’m happy.
“I kept calm at the end, but I was so nervous. I’m so happy to get it over the line. I can’t explain it in words. It’s just so special.
“I got here and I thought I’m going to give him a hell of a match, but I didn’t expect to win it. I’m so happy I won it and that’s the only thing I can say. Thank you to everyone who was here to make it even more special.”
Price is now due for a break from competitive darts before making a comeback in January, with the World Masters on the horizon following the Bahrain Darts Masters and Saudi Arabia Darts Masters.
