Harry Potter fans finally decide if they’re Christmas films or not | Films | Entertainment

The Harry Potter films, a staple of the festive television schedule, have sparked a debate among fans over whether they qualify as Christmas movies.

Christmas is traditionally a time for gathering with friends and family, often with the television playing in the background, broadcasting an array of festive films and specials. This inevitably leads to debates about what constitutes a Christmas film, with many insisting the narrative must be set during the holiday season.

Despite not being categorised as Christmas films, there are those who argue the Harry Potter series should be included in this genre, primarily due to the festive scenes in the first instalment.

Although their generally dark tone, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, along with the rest of the series, feature on many people’s lists of films to watch during their festive movie marathons. The magical themes and the nostalgia they evoke make them a popular choice.

Fans have been divided on this issue, but the official Harry Potter TikTok account has weighed in, providing three reasons why the first Harry Potter film can indeed be classified as a Christmas film.

Their first argument centred on the “gorgeous” snowy scenes and decorations adorning the Great Hall.

“Just look at Hagrid dragging the huge tree,” they posted, accompanying a clip from the film. “Imagine how amazing it would feel to walk into the Great Hall and be surrounded by massive Christmas trees.”

The second reason, they suggested, was due to the enchanting and atmospheric music soundtrack of the film, stating: “Whether it’s the tinkly bell sounds or the swelling crescendos, there’s something that reminds us of Christmas.”

Another heart-warming reason the film should be considered a festive film, according to the TikTok, is because it depicts Harry’s first proper Christmas, away from the Dursleys.

They argued: “Harry waking up to a Christmas gift on Christmas Day is one of the most heart-warming scenes of the entire film.”

Numerous fans quickly took to the comment section to share their own views, with many agreeing the Harry Potter films are indeed Christmas films.

“Potterheads know all too well that the magic of Christmas is intertwined with Harry’s story. Don’t deny it, these films are perfect for the holiday season,” one viewer argued.

“I adore The Christmas in Harry Potter very much,” a second viewer said, while another added: “Love the atmosphere.”

Another person claimed: “More Christmas than Die Hard. I said it.”
