UK to get brand new ski resort complete with slopes and lodges | UK | Travel
Wales could soon be home to a massive indoor snow centre and ski resort, offering year-round skiing opportunities and potentially serving as a training base for Britain’s winter Olympics squads. The proposed Rhydycar West development would be situated in Merthyr Tydfil, selected for its convenient location and excellent transport connections.
The Welsh Government has passed the final planning decision back to Merthyr Tydfil Council, with an announcement on whether the ski and leisure complex will receive approval expected in early 2026. According to the project’s website, the snow centre would utilise cutting-edge technology to deliver ideal skiing conditions throughout the year. Its 400-metre ski slope would rank among Europe’s longest, described as a “game-changer for British Winter Sport”.
The facility could serve as a training venue for Britain’s Olympic Ski Team and other winter sport competitors, whilst also providing skiing, snowboarding and additional activities for the general public.
However, winter sports aren’t the only attraction planned. The development also includes an indoor waterpark, heated to tropical temperatures, featuring various slides and even an artificial beach, allowing visitors to experience summer all year round, reports Wales Online.
Additionally, the proposals encompass both indoor and outdoor adventure parks, complete with a mountain coaster, clip ‘n’ climb facilities, and zip wires amongst other thrilling attractions. Should one day not be enough to experience everything on offer, visitors will have the option to stay overnight and make the most of the facilities for an extended period.
Three separate hotel wings are planned: a premium section featuring a spa, an affordable wing providing comfortable budget-friendly rooms, and the Resort Wing designed for conference delegates with co-working facilities.
Additionally, a range of woodland lodges will be available to create an authentic ski resort ambience. The Rhydycar West developers have confirmed these will cater for both premium and budget-conscious guests.
The development has been under consideration for several years, with backing from organisations including Snowsport Cymru Wales and GB Snowsport. The scheme carries an estimated price tag of £300 million and, according to developers, would generate 1,500 construction jobs, with approximately 800 permanent positions once operational.
WalesOnline previously went out to gauge local opinion in Merthyr Tydfil about the proposals. Mario Viazzani, from the Station Cafe, commented: “I’m all for it. I think it will be great for the town. It should bring employment, which is must needed in all the Valleys towns.”
Meanwhile, Chris Jones from the Pet and Garden Centre remarked: “We live in a beautiful area, so they’re not just going to come to the ski-slope, they’re going to come to other things, like Brecon Beacons. It’s got to be good for the town centre.”
