If you haven’t already visited this pretty city – it’s a must. It’s known as one of the most idyllic and quintessentially English cities. Often forgotten about, this stunning part of the UK is a quiet and beautiful location that’s no doubt worth visiting. 

It attracts visitors from all over the world and it’s just a short train ride away from London, taking just an hour. Canterbury is just as charming in winter as it is in summer making it a great place to visit all year round. 

Lonely Planet says: “Canterbury is a city built around its cathedral. The World Heritage-listed site that dominates the city center is both one of England’s top tourist attractions and a holy place of worship. 

“It is a vast edifice crammed with enthralling stories, arresting architecture and an enduring sense of spirituality.”

It adds that the city is one with an energetic student population, good restaurants and an outstanding arts venue, the Marlowe Theatre. 

One must-see while you’re there is Canterbury Cathedral. This famous grand structure is the centre point of the settlement.

UNESCO has granted world heritage status to part of the city, including St Martin’s Church, St Augustine’s Abbey and the Cathedral.

A visitor on Tripadvisor said: “One for the bucket list! Photos do not do this justice. To see it in person is incredible!

“We did the tour and the guide was so knowledgeable and passionate, it really made it special. 

“Everyone was professional and so well organised. The area around the cathedral is wonderful to wander through.”

The city has a perfect mix of nature, greenery, pubs, shops and historical things to do.

You can take a walk along its streets, popping into shops or stopping off for a bite to eat in its cafes. There’s a huge range of traditional and modern options meaning there’s something for everyone.

Or, if you’re hoping to enjoy the greenery on offer, you should take a walk to Westgate Gardens which is reminiscent of a scene from a painting. 

The gardens are situated along the banks of the River Stour, adjacent to the historic Westgate Towers and Tower House.
