Speaking on the Served with Andy Roddick podcast, the former Wimbledon finalist said: “The question is… and he was questioning this after the US Open. I don’t know that he can train the way he used to.
“I would suspect that you can’t train that psychotically, and I mean that in a good way, at 38 years old. And if you can’t do that, can you get your body to hold up over the course of two weeks at a major, over best-of-five?
“The answer this year was no. To his own admission. It was like ‘I don’t know if my body can do it. When I get to the semis am I going to beat these guys if my body is damaged goods by the time I get there?’ That is the whole thing for this conversation.”
Djokovic is tied with Margaret Court on 24 Grand Slams across his career. However, he has not won a Grand Slam since the 2023 French Open, although he did win an Olympic gold medal in the Paris 2024 games.
He has an eye on defending his golden title in 2028, when the games go to Los Angeles. Djokovic made this ambition clear when he said: “I’ve always had this throughout my life and my career.
“I’ve always had a schedule in my head for a year or more, what I want, how I want it. Since I’ve achieved absolutely all possible goals, I said about the 2028 Olympics.
“I wanted to play for so many more years. So maybe ending up at the Olympic Games with the Serbian flag, that would be nice.”
