Donald Trump humiliated as old Greenland tweet haunts him | World | News

An old Greenland tweet posted by President Donald Trump from six years ago has resurfaced in the wake of his publicly renewed interest in acquiring the territory. Trump first floated buying Greenland during his first term and revived this idea during his 2024-2025 presidential campaign.

While Trump has insisted that he wants to purchase Greenland for the purpose of national security, back in 2019, he played down his plans and made a ‘promise’ to the territory. In a tweet dating back to August 2020, 2019 the US president posted a manipulated image of a seaside town filled with colourful houses, dominated by a massive golden skyscraper carrying his name. The exaggerated gold tower is a nod to his real-estate branding.

In this post he made his feelings clear that he had no plans to embellish the island’s coast with a Trump Tower.

“I promise not to do this to Greenland!” Trump said.

And now the notorious tweet has been brought back to life with users on social media mocking Trump’s ‘promise’.

“How long would this promise hold?”, said one user. Another added: “Promise is a debt but to Trump a promise is like negotiation, nobody knows what he is going to do next.”

A third simply said: “What an eyesore.” “The Internet doesn’t forget and that’s the beauty of it all”, wrote another.

“He documented all his AGENDAs on Twitter” said a fifth.

Trump is attempting to justify taking control of the island due to its strategic location, abundant mineral resources, and increasing Russian and Chinese military activity in the region.

This claim has been opposed by many, including Barack Obama’s former assistant secretary of state Frank Rose, the last US official to negotiate a defence agreement with Denmark and the Greenland Home Rule administration.

Earlier today, January 16 Trump inisisted his need for the terrority, he said: “I may put a tariff on countries that don’t go along with Greenland. We need Greenland for national security, so I may do that.
