Trump hammers Starmer in latest stunt over Board of Peace invite | US | News

US President Donald Trump has dramatically and publicly withdrawn his invitation for Canada to be a member of his new Board of Peace in a Truth Social post from his account addressed to the leader of Canada, Mark Carney.

In what could be a future move against British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who has so far also snubbed the Board of Peace, alongside France’s President Emmanuel Macron, this latest declaration suggests a hardening of Trump’s position against those who have resisted his invitation to join the group – which is suggested could be a rival to the United Nations.

So far in a somewhat ocntradictary position, Trump has threatened Macron with tariffs of over 200% against French wine if the nation does not join, but has expressed understanding that Italy’s Meloni must go through a legislative process before her country is able to sign up. Trump’s latest Truth Social post stated:

“Dear Prime Minister Carney:

“Please let this letter serve to represent that the Board of Peace is withdrawing its invitation to you regarding Canada’s joining, what will be, the most prestigious Board of Leaders ever assembled, at any time.

“Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

Tony Blair adds to pressure on Starmer

On Wednesday, former-Labour PM Sir Tony Blair dramatically snubbed current leader Keir Starmer by attending the glitzy launch of Donald Trump’s controversial new Board of Peace at the Davos World Economic Forum.

The former Prime Minister was personally welcomed by the US President, who declared: “Thank you, Tony, for being here.”

In a move that will likely enrage Sir Keir, who has boycotted the new body, Sir Tony has even agreed to sit on its executive.

President Trump boldly claimed the Board “has the chance to be one of the most consequential bodies ever created” – despite critics branding it his attempt to create an alternative to the United Nations with himself as chairman.

Labour’s Board of Peace concerns

The Board of Peace was originally created to govern Gaza following a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas but now appears to have a wide-ranging role promoting peace across the globe.

But while around 35 countries have flocked to join the project, the UK is refusing to take part amid concerns about potential Russian involvement in the plan.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper blasted: “We won’t be one of the signatories today, because this is about a legal treaty that raises much broader issues.

“And we do also have concerns about President Putin being part of something which is talking about peace, when we have still not seen any signs from Putin that there will be a commitment to peace in Ukraine.”
