In a remarkable story of endurance, a young man found himself imprisoned within his own body for years, unable to communicate or move, whilst everyone around him assumed he was oblivious to his surroundings.

Martin Pistorius, hailing from Johannesburg, South Africa, was merely 12 years old when he became gravely ill. Initially, his symptoms were written off as flu, but he was subsequently diagnosed with cryptococcal meningitis and tuberculosis of the brain.

His health deteriorated swiftly. He lost his capacity to speak, maintain eye contact or control his body before entering what medical professionals termed a vegetative state.

His parents, Rodney and Joan Pistorius, were informed their son would probably never regain consciousness.

Despite this heartbreaking diagnosis, they persevered in caring for him, clinging to hope. What remained unknown to them was that Martin started to regain awareness around the age of 14 or 15,.

During an appearance on The Wright Stuff, Martin recounted the moment consciousness emerged, likening it to “when you are trying to wake up from a dream, but can’t”. Speaking to UNILAD in 2023, Martin, now aged 49, recalled: “I remember around my 16th birthday, people talking about the stubble on my chin and wondering whether to shave me.”

Between the ages of 16 and 19, Martin’s awareness returned completely. Yet he remained paralysed, save for minimal eye movement, rendering him entirely incapable of communication.

Fully conscious of his environment, Martin could overhear discussions and keep track of significant global events, including Princess Diana’s death and the 9/11 atrocities. He explained: “I was able to hear, see and understand everything around me.

“But I had absolutely no power or control over anything. For me, that feeling of complete and utter powerlessness is probably the worst feeling I have ever experienced.

“It is like you don’t exist; every single thing in your life is decided by someone else. Everything, from what you wear, to what you eat and drink, even if you eat or drink, to where you will be tomorrow, or next week, and there is nothing you can do about it.”

Speaking to NPR, his mother disclosed the three devastating words she once uttered in his presence, unaware he could comprehend: “I hope you die.”

She subsequently clarified she was desperately seeking respite. Martin acknowledged he eventually grasped her anguish, noting she could only perceive “a cruel parody of the once-healthy child she had loved so much”.

Martin’s days were spent at a specialist care facility, immobilised and subjected to endless reruns of Barney the Dinosaur, a character he subsequently admitted he grew to detest. He measured time by observing shadows shift across the room, all whilst attempting frantically to indicate he was aware.

Describing one effort to alert his father, Martin told the Daily Mail: “I would try to get him to understand I had returned, willing my arm to work. ‘Dad! I’m here! Can’t you see?’ but he didn’t notice me.”

He recalled observing a minuscule twitch in his arm, recognising it was far too subtle to be detected by others. “Rage filled me. I felt sure I’d burst,” he penned.

When questioned by his father about his well-being, Martin explained he could merely gaze back wordlessly.

A crucial breakthrough occurred when therapist Virna van der Walt detected slight eye movements and suspected Martin retained consciousness. She encouraged his parents to arrange a cognitive assessment for him.

Gradually, he started to recover limited movement and was ultimately able to interact through a computer equipped with specialised software.

Martin subsequently pursued computer science studies and currently operates as a web developer and computer scientist, having also released a memoir entitled ‘Ghost Boy’ in 2012. He later wed social worker Joanna, and the pair now share a son and enjoy a contented family existence together.
