Australian Open LIVE: Carlos Alcaraz faces unexpected ban as extreme heat wreaks havoc | Tennis | Sport

Australian Open bosses have been forced to take drastic measures to combat the extreme heat in Melbourne.

The region is currently experiencing a blistering heatwave with temperatures reaching the mid-forties on Tuesday.

Tournament organisers invoked their extreme heat policy in response to the scorching weather.

Today’s remaining quarter-final matches will be played with the roof closed, with air conditioning in place on the main courts.

Special conditions have also been put in place for tournament staff, with ball kids given shorter spells on court along with increased recovery times and additional relief squads.
