Britain’s deluge of wet weather is set to continue this weekend, with scattered snow forecast from the tip of Scotland to London on Friday before a huge storm on Sunday. Maps by WXCharts predicted a band of rain will move in from the northwest on February 13, hitting Scotland and northern England first, before moving over the country throughout the day.

At midnight leading into Friday, the majority of England will be drenched in rain from Manchester to Southampton, with only the southwest coast spared. Northumberland has been forecast a light dusting of snow overnight, the same as Wales, but Scotland will bear the brunt of the storm, with heavier snow in the north indicated by deep purple on the weather maps.

By 9am, Yorkshire, Birmingham and the West Midlands will wake up to a slightly drier day. By this time, the rain will be targeting the southeast, and white patches on the maps indicate snow could fall over London, and counties to the north of the city.

However, the forecaster predicted that snow will not settle in the capital — this will be reserved for the north of the UK, with a heavier patch of snow forecast to hang over the Pennines, and up to 3cm of powder predicted to settle in Northumberland. Up to 2cm could settle over Wales by midday.

The heaviest snow will fall in Scotland. Maps predict that by 12pm, 10cm could settle west of Aberdeen. Up to 3cm could accumulate in Edinburgh, while parts of the Scottish Borders could be hit too.

Luckily, temperatures are set to stay above freezing in the morning, so the overnight rain won’t have a chance to turn to ice in most regions, but by 6pm, temperatures will plunge to lows of -3C in northern England and -6C in parts of Scotland.

Friday’s showers look to be scattered. The real barrage is set to come days later on Sunday, when maps show the entire UK will be blanketed under sheets of rain and snow.

The Met Office acknowledges that snow is hard to forecast, and its forecast differs, but its outlook from Thursday to Saturday has also predicted unsettled weather.

“Turning colder from Friday with a chance of snow showers, particularly in the north. Dry, cold and sunny for many on Saturday,” it said.

From Sunday, it said showers or longer spells of rain are expected as Atlantic low-pressure systems dominate. It said heavy rain may be focused on the western hills, while there may be snow in the north, mainly on high ground.

“Strong winds are possible at times, especially around coasts. Temperatures will probably be near normal. Later in the period, there is a chance that drier, more settled conditions may begin to develop,” it said.
