The prospect of a sun-soaked getaway to escape the chilly British weather isn’t as far-fetched as you may think, with the ideal destination just a few hours from the UK.

Cyprus offers 300 days of sunshine annually, golden sand beaches, and crystal-clear waters, making it the ideal location to escape the cold snap gripping the nation. Nestled just over four hours from the UK, several budget airlines offer affordable flights to the island, particularly during the quieter winter period.

Ryanair offers direct flights from Birmingham to the coastal city of Paphos, with fares starting at £20 each way, while departures from London Stansted start at £24 one-way. The brief flight duration makes it perfect for short getaways for travellers looking to escape the sun, or families travelling with children, particularly during the February half-term.

Making it even more desirable is the inviting warmer climate, with temperatures reaching up to 22C during the winter months. This week, the Mediterranean island is forecast to welcome highs of 21C, with sunny conditions and a moderate breeze, while Brits face a chilly 3C over the weekend, and daytime highs of around 7C.

Winter sun seekers can explore the island’s cultural attractions, historical landmarks, and walking routes while taking advantage of reduced visitor numbers, as they’re far less likely to encounter lengthy queues or have to share those spectacular vistas. Among the island’s most celebrated destinations is Ayia Napa, famed for its lively nightlife scene throughout the summer season.

However, during the winter months, the atmosphere transforms dramatically, with major nightclubs shut while several traditional bars continue to welcome guests into the evening. This period offers an ideal opportunity for holidaymakers seeking a more tranquil and authentic experience.

Elsewhere, holidaymakers can trek through picturesque landscapes or discover charming villages and monasteries in the Troodos Mountains. From January through March, a ski resort operates for those eager to take to the slopes, and motorists can drive directly to the pistes whilst soaking in remarkable views en route.

Whether you’re visiting the mountains in the sun or snow, a visit isn’t complete without sampling the regional fortified dessert wine known as commandaria. Residents have even been known to offer bottles of the wine from their homes for just a handful of Euros, perfect!

The capital of Cyprus, Nicosia, is another key destination to explore away from the coast, with its 16th-century Venetian-walled Old Town. There are vibrant cafés, stunning architecture and a mix of Greek and Turkish culture to absorb during a city break or day trip.

This city has remained split since 1974, with the southern portion internationally acknowledged as the Republic of Cyprus, while the northern section falls under the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, recognised solely by Turkey. A ‘green line’ runs through the city, making it the world’s only divided capital.

Visitors can typically traverse the green line without difficulty, though certain hire vehicles cannot enter the northern territory. If you purchase items during your cross-border excursion, bear in mind that they may be subject to customs restrictions.

There are renowned attractions across Cyprus that will be significantly reduced in capacity during the winter, making it an ideal time to visit. Holidaymakers can marvel at the legendary Aphrodite’s Rock, visit the ancient Tombs of the Kings, or embark on a day excursion to the Akamas Peninsula National Park along the western coastline, celebrated for its pristine golden beaches.
