A spokesperson from Northumbria police said: “Just after 1.30pm today (Tuesday) we received a report of a male sighted carrying a sword on High Street in Newbiggin-by-the-sea.

“Armed officers attended the scene as a precaution, and the man was found to be in possession of a plastic toy sword.

“While the call was made in good faith, there is no risk to the public.”
