DVLA alert as UK drivers told ‘don’t panic’ | Personal Finance | Finance

Millions of motorists are being urged not to “panic” if they misplace one crucial item before heading out the door.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) reminded drivers to double-check they have everything, including their driving licence, before setting off.

And it adds: “Don’t panic, it’s quick and easy to order a replacement.”

The message comes amid ongoing efforts by the DVLA to push more motorists towards its online services, which allow drivers to replace lost, stolen or damaged licences in minutes.

It costs £20 to replace your licence

Drivers who need a new card can apply online via Gov.uk. A replacement licence costs £20 and payment can be made by MasterCard, Visa, Electron or Delta debit or credit card.

Motorists can replace either a full driving licence or a provisional driving licence using the online system.

To qualify, you must:

  • Be a resident of Great Britain (a different service operates in Northern Ireland)
  • Not be disqualified from driving for any reason

Applicants will need to provide addresses they have lived at for the last three years and, if known, their:

  • Driving licence number
  • National Insurance number
  • Passport number

What about your photo?

If your driving licence is due to expire within two years, you will be given the option to update your photo as part of the replacement process.

Drivers can:

  • Keep their current photo
  • Use their passport photo

However, a passport photo can only be used if:

  • The licence is due to expire within two years
  • The driver has a valid UK passport
  • Permission is given for DVLA to access the passport image

If the DVLA requires a new photo, it will tell applicants how to send one. Importantly, drivers do not need the old paper counterpart of their licence to apply.

If your licence is stolen

Motorists are advised to contact the police if their driving licence has been stolen before applying for a replacement.

Once an application has been submitted, the DVLA will send a confirmation email. Applicants may also be invited to take part in research by email, although they can opt out.

Found your old licence?

Drivers who later find their original licence after ordering a replacement must return it to the DVLA with an explanation.

It should be sent to: DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AB
