The spotlight has firmly fixed on Yorkshire as Wuthering Heights, shot entirely across the Dales, arrives in cinemas, with enthusiasts already pencilling the region into their 2026 itineraries.

Hollywood A-listers Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi established their base within the Yorkshire Dales throughout production, with numerous treasures of the county’s landscape featuring prominently on screen.

While Emily Brontë’s literary masterpiece was primarily situated within the Yorkshire Moors, near her own home, this cinematic interpretation opted to anchor its production within the Yorkshire Dales.

Notably, one particular Dale emerged as the genuine scene-stealer, appearing repeatedly across the picture. Swaledale appears to hold numerous connections to the filming locations for the 2026 production, with one heritage landmark accessible to visitors being converted into a film set for several sequences.

Old Gang Lead Mines

Positioned high upon the moorland, nestled between Swaledale and Arkengarthdale, stand the striking remnants of an 18th-century lead manufacturing complex.

It endures as one of the most substantial and well-maintained lead-mining locations in the district, boasting a towering chimney stack and the skeletal remains of what was once a bustling mill.

The ruins rest peacefully amid exposed moorland and are accessible solely by foot; typically forming part of a circular route departing from neighbouring Gunnerside or Muker and traversing the moors.

As a heritage location, it remains completely free to explore and accessible to all; though for filming purposes, several additions were incorporated into the site.

At the opening of Wuthering Heights, as a horse-drawn carriage travels across the verdant countryside, it glides past the Old Gang Smelt Mill in a stunning shot.

The location appears once more in additional footage, with lead stars Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi wandering through the fog-laden moorland.

To guarantee the location received proper protection, Sarah Whiteley took charge, serving as the Senior Historic Environment Officer at Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Her role involved monitoring the cast and crew’s engagement with this historic landmark, and she offered some perspective on what this entailed for the production to Conde Nast Traveller.

Whiteley revealed that prior to the cast’s scheduled arrival, the location was shut to other visitors to permit time to enhance it with elements such as painted scenery and additional foliage.

She said: “The locations team wanted to put an installation of a sort of cliff-face-type prop, so we decided which was the least damaging place to put that,” and clearly, it was the Old Gang Lead Mines.

Swaledale

Viewers are eager to bring the universe of Wuthering Heights that they witnessed on screen into their own experiences, and a journey to Swaledale is the ideal destination to absorb the atmosphere.

From the opening frames of the production to some of its most powerful moments, the region served a substantial part in translating the timeless tale to the screen.

In fact, a brief stroll from the Old Gang site near Swaledale, positioned in the moorland above Langthwaite village, lies a twisting road called Bouldershaw Lane.

From that lane one can observe the expansive field, which is in private ownership, where Margot Robbie dramatically strides through wearing her enormous wedding gown whilst clutching a bouquet in the film.

The Melbecks Moor in Swaledale was also utilised as a stunning backdrop, forming part of the magnificent Yorkshire Dales National Park.

It is an exceptionally isolated location situated in the upper reaches of the dale and consists mainly of uninhabited moorland, which proved challenging to access for the cast and crew.

This moorland area is scattered with additional abandoned structures and tranquil meandering roads, which are also believed to have been employed for filming.

The natural conditions of these locations certainly played their part at times, with the performers having recalled experiences on set of enduring bitter cold and extensive walking.
