New budget Android phone revealed with a Marmite design – do you love or hate it?

If you are in the market for a decent but affordable smartphone, you are probably looking at getting an Android phone. Thanks to so many manufacturers offering devices at various prices, you can usually bag a bargain that you might not find if you want an iPhone.

One British brand flying the flag for cheaper Android phones is Nothing. The design-led firm has just revealed the design of its upcoming Nothing Phone 4a, and just like Marmite, you’re going to either love it or hate it.

The Phone 4a launch event had already been confirmed by Nothing for March 5, but the firm simply couldn’t wait to show off the design in full on its social media:

The Phone 4a is set to be much cheaper than the £799 Phone 3 that Nothing launched last year. The ‘a’ series phones are priced much more affordably, with last year’s impressive Phone 3a retailing from a pocket-friendly £329.

I reviewed that phone and called it “the best budget phone you can buy” and I stand by that. For the money, you get wonderfully unique design and thoughtful, minimal software. Sure, the processor and camera quality is a peg below the best, but it also costs hundreds less than an iPhone 17, Samsung Galaxy S26 or Google Pixel 10, and looks far more interesting, in my book.

But of course you might not care what your phone looks like, or you’ll stick it in a case and forget what colour it was in the first place. The Phone 4a is set to use a slightly different version of the firm’s renowned ‘Glyph’ interface, which has used either LED strip lights or a dot matrix display to alert users to notification, timers and other functions.

Before posting the product image, Nothing also revealed on X that Phone 4a will have a “Glyph Bar” with “9 individually controllable mini-LEDs, 40% brighter than previous (a) series. Patented tech for a more natural, neutral, bleed-free glow.”

Nothing usually drip-feeds information about its upcoming hardware releases like this to feed the hype machine, and it appears to be working, with comments flooding its social media channels.

While the image of the Phone 4a shows a white model, previous social posts have hinted we could also be getting the device in blue and pink versions. The Phone 3a came in black, white or blue, but the addition of a pink phone would be a departure for Nothing, a brand that mostly deals in stark monochrome, both in its hardware and software.

As the post on X says, the full reveal of the Phone 4a is coming in an announcement at 10:30am UK time on March 5. Tune in then to find out if this Android phone will make its way onto your shopping list.
