Three mobile customers hit with new charges on bill from April | Personal Finance | Finance
Thousands of Three customers will see their phone bills rise in a few weeks, with the phone network starting to notify customers of the change, expected to come into force from April 1. Customers, however, will now see bill increases shown in pounds and pence, rather than as percentages as under the previous system.
It comes as Ofcom introduced new rules last January that require telecoms firms to set out mid-contract price increases in pounds and pence for new customers. Providers were also banned from linking mid-contract rises to inflation figures, with the regulations applying to customers who took out contracts on or after November 9, 2025.
However, this month, telecoms companies signed a new agreement to move existing customers onto the pounds and pence system.
This means that customers who joined Three before September 8, 2024 and are now out of contract will be impacted by the change, reports The Sun.
Mobile and broadband customers will see their bills rise by up to £2.30 a month, or £27.60 a year from April, depending on data allowance.
Home broadband customers should see their bills increase by £3.50 a month, or £42 a year.
Under the previous system, bills would have increased by the December CPI rate of 3.4% plus an additional 3.9%, for a combined rise of 7.3%.
Someone with a monthly contract costing £10 could now see their bill rise by £27.60 a year, whereas under the previous system it would have increased by £8.76 a year, meaning they will now pay £18.84 more a year.
In comparison, someone with a £ 20-a-month broadband contract will now pay an extra £3.50 a month, or £42 a year, while under the previous system their bill would have increased by £1.46 a month, or £17.52 a year, a change of £24.48.
