Nico Jover’s contract masterstroke as Arsenal forced to fork out | Football | Sport

Arsenal set-piece coach Nicolas Jover is understood to be rewarded with a bonus each time his side scores from a set piece. The Gunners added two more in their 2-1 victory over Chelsea on Sunday, both arriving from corners, bringing them to a joint-record 16 goals from corners this campaign.

This equals the joint-highest total recorded in a single season, alongside Oldham Athletic in 1992/93, West Bromwich Albion in 2016–17, and Arsenal’s own tally from 2023/24. William Saliba struck first from Bukayo Saka’s delivery, before Jurrien Timber headed in another in the second half.

According to The Athletic, Jover’s contract contains a bonus clause linked to goals scored from dead-ball situations. When Mikel Arteta signed his most recent Arsenal contract in September 2024, the club is believed to have opened separate negotiations with the remainder of his backroom staff, including set-piece coach Jover, assistant manager Albert Stuivenberg and goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana.

Jover, whose expertise lies in set-piece work, was reported to have considerable leverage during discussions. The final agreement included a clause ensuring the 44-year-old receives bonuses for goals Arsenal score from set-piece situations.

Arsenal have taken a 1-0 lead from a corner nine times in the Premier League this season, a figure Opta says is the joint-highest ever recorded in a single campaign, matching Southampton’s return in 1994/95. The team from north London also tops the league for total set‐piece goals, having netted 21 so far, more than any other squad this season.

Jover was recruited to Arsenal by Arteta from Manchester City in 2021. He received glowing commendations from Arteta who declared he regarded the Frenchman as the best in his profession.

“In his field, in other fields and as a person,” the Gunners manager previously stated. “And the relationship that we have – that’s why I made the decision to bring him to City when I was there and then to Arsenal.”

Arsenal currently occupy the top spot in the Premier League table, five points clear of City, who have a match in hand on the leaders. Pep Guardiola’s side also maintained the pressure last weekend with a 1-0 victory over Leeds United at Elland Road.
