Manchester United boss Michael Carrick provided an update on the injury situation before his side’s trip to Newcastle.

  • Luke Shaw: The left-back was withdrawn early against Crystal Palace but may recover to face Newcastle. Michael Carrick stated: “They [Shaw and Maguire] just weren’t feeling too well, so, hopefully, they will be feeling better soon.”

  • Harry Maguire: Like Shaw, the defender is a doubt due to illness rather than a physical strike. Carrick added: “We’ll see how they recover. It was a bit of a bug in the camp.”

  • Lisandro Martinez: The Argentine remains unavailable for the trip to St James’ Park due to a lingering issue. Carrick confirmed: “Licha is still out, he’s not ready just yet but he’s making good progress.”

  • Mason Mount: The former Chelsea man is still working his way back to full fitness after recent setbacks. Carrick updated: “Mason is nearing a return, but Newcastle might come a little bit too soon for him.”

  • Matthijs de Ligt: The Dutchman is still sidelined with a long-term back issue that has proven difficult to resolve. Carrick previously explained: “Matthijs has had a back issue which has been a bit slow to progress. He’s heading in the right direction.”

  • Patrick Dorgu: United will be without their January standout for several more weeks following a hamstring injury. Carrick said last month: “Pat, unfortunately, is going to be out for a period of time. It’s disappointing because he’s had such a big couple of weeks.”

  • Chido Obi: The teenager suffered a worrying head injury during an Under-21 clash this week and is following concussion protocols. Carrick said: “Chido had a nasty head injury. We’re following the right steps to make sure he’s okay before he returns to training.”
