Rachel Reeves lives in La La Land – Robert Jenrick explains why | Politics | News
We learned three things in the Spring Statement. First, that Rachel Reeves has done even more damage to our economy than was thought. The Office for Budget Responsibility published their numbers and they were bleak. Our economy’s growth rate for this year was downgraded — again. Wages and incomes are set to flatline. Unemployment is set to reach a decade high. Under Reeves, more people will be out of work than during the pandemic.
Taxes are set to reach their highest ever level. But we learned two other things too.
We learned that Rachel Reeves has no ideas to turnaround the economy she’s tanked.
Nothing to cut energy and water bills, which are surging under Labour and hammering families. No action on food and groceries, the cost of which is nearly 10% up under Labour.
No action or ideas to cut the exploding benefits bill and get people back to work.
The statement was instead awash with delusional boasting. Reeves told us the plan she’s been “driving forward since the election is the right one.”
So the third thing we learned was that Reeves is in La La Land. On a different planet to the rest of us. Has a politician ever done so much damage and showed so little contrition? Been so lacking in self awareness? When she became Chancellor, inflation was 2%. It’s now 3% — nearly double the average in Europe and the highest in the G7.
The numbers don’t lie. Our economy is shrinking per person — and household incomes are barely set to increase over the next few years. The final three months of last year saw a record jump in the number of businesses in financial distress. Much of our industry is simply disappearing.
Reform will deliver the change we need.
By putting an end to your Government wasting tens of billions of your money every year, we will bring down your taxes. By defusing the benefits bomb set to bankrupt Britain, we’ll be able to stop Labour’s crazy increase to fuel duty. Could there be a worse time to do this?
And we’ll cut your bills by ending the stupid ban on drilling our own oil and gas. With the Tories no longer able to win elections, only Reform can defeat Labour and bring about the real change we need.
