The brighter weather has us dreaming of days spent outdoors, and what better way than to walk along one of the most beautiful hiking trails during a European getaway.
Nestled among winding valleys and majestic mountains in South Tyrol, Italy, is the stunning emerald-green lake of Lago di Braies (Pragser Wildsee). Found in the Prags Dolomites, the alpine lake has often been dubbed the ‘Pearl of the Alps’, and it’s become one of the most photographed places in Europe.
It’s left visitors captivated by its crystal-clear waters, which reflect its striking backdrop of dramatic mountains and forested woodland, making it feel as though you’ve stepped into a painting. There’s a charming wooden boat house that adds to the breathtaking scene, with rowing boats decorating the pristine scene as they float over the perfectly clear water.

Experts at Celtic Trails Walking Holidays said Lago di Braies is “the most photographed lake in Italy”, and offers a “gentle 3.5km perimeter walk that is accessible for all fitness levels.” The circular walking trail takes between 1.5 and 2 hours to complete, passing pine trees and hidden pebble beaches around the lake.
It’s a great opportunity to marvel at the snow-capped mountains that tower over the pristine lake and capture every awe-inspiring vista as the path winds around Lago di Braies. The path is even said to be suitable for pushchairs, so you won’t need to worry about misplacing your foot on any rugged terrain.
Unsurprisingly, the alpine lake attracts thousands of visitors eager to capture the perfect Insta-worthy shot, particularly during the summer months from around July to August. However, to avoid crowds and capture that picture-perfect shot, travellers advise visiting in June or September, when it’s less busy but still offers reasonable weather.
Many visitors have also noted that arriving before 7am guarantees a quieter experience, or after 3pm, when crowds start to depart, with more space available in the nearby car park. But don’t worry, if you travel outside the peak summer months, you’ll still get the full experience and be able to hire one of the iconic rowing boats to glide across the serene lake, which are typically available from around April to November.

If you’re looking to extend your stay in the area, there’s the Hotel Lago di Braies, which sits on the edge of the green lake, with balcony rooms available to soak up the picturesque landscape by day or night, away from the crowds. Nearby, there’s Emmas Bistro, serving up hot dishes and drinks, with indoor and al fresco dining available against the surreal backdrop.
Following a visit to the lakes in May last year, one traveller shared on TripAdvisor: “One of the most breathtaking views in the Alps. We took the rowboat, and it was such a magical experience. It is just like what you would imagine from pictures on the Internet. A must-see for sure. Parking is widely available but is slightly expensive; driving is the best way to get there. 11/10 experience and views.”
Another avid explorer visited in October and commented: “The lake is something beautiful, scenery and breathtaking views, I rented the boat, and it’s taken a ride, and we did the circuit on foot, very beautiful.”
“I have seen many mountain lakes before, and everyone is unique. But Lake Braies is something very special. Surrounded by high mountains, it is quite clear and, depending on the sunlight and clouds, there are fascinating light plays. The tranquillity is overwhelming if you manage to leave at a time when not exactly the worst streams of tourists are travelling,” one shared.
