Sabalenka sparks VAR debate over Draper Indian Wells controversy | Tennis | Sport
World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka believes players must halt play straightaway to seek a video review for hindrance, rather than wait to decide. It follows Daniil Medvedev’s dispute with Jack Draper, which caused controversy at Indian Wells on Thursday.
During their quarter-final match, at 5-5, 0-15 in the second set, Draper appeared to indicate that Medvedev’s return was out. However, the rally went on for another seven shots before the Russian player hit a backhand into the net. Medvedev then requested a video review from umpire Aurelie Tourte, claiming potential hindrance. The official told Draper: “You did something different in the rally than you would normally do,” and subsequently awarded the point to Medvedev.
Medvedev apologised to Draper after winning the match in straight sets for any distress his claim may have caused. The British No.1 defended himself, asserting that he had not interfered with his opponent’s play.
And speaking after Friday’s semi-final win over Linda Noskova, Sabalenka has had her say on the incident – sharing her view that the appeal should have been made straight away.
She said: “What I think is really awkward is you can finish the point and then ask for that.
“Because if you really got bothered, then you should stop immediately and ask for the video review… if he would have won the point, he wouldn’t probably ask for the video review, right? I don’t really think that’s the way it should be.
“If he got bothered, (he should) ask for the video review straightaway.”
According to the video review procedures for Indian Wells, reviews can be sought after point-ending shots or if a player immediately stops play.
She added: “With me, it was unnecessary for the referee to call that one.
“About Daniil, theoretically he (Draper) made the move, but I don’t think it bothered Daniil that much.”
Sabalenka faces Elena Rybakina in the Indian Wells final on Sunday. Their meeting will be a rematch of January’s Australian Open final which Sabalenka won in straight sets.
