Liverpool trigger contract clause as key Arne Slot player tied down | Football | Sport
Liverpool have resolved any uncertainty surrounding Alisson Becker’s future at the club, with reports suggesting the Reds have activated the one-year option on his contract to tie him down for an extra 12 months. The goalkeeper’s existing deal was due to conclude in the summer, though Liverpool had the choice of an additional year since his last renewal in 2021, which they have now exercised.
That is according to The Times who say Alisson is now in line to remain at Anfield until 2027. This development follows recent speculation about the 33-year-old’s future, with reports he was considering a departure from the Reds in the summer, amid potential interest from Italy.
Juventus and AC Milan have both been linked to bringing Alisson back to Serie A, where he previously represented Roma before joining Liverpool in 2018, but Liverpool have made a definitive decision on his immediate future.
Alisson’s agent, Ze Maria Ness, appears to have confirmed the Reds’ decision to activate the option on his contract, stating to WinWin: “We have just renewed the contract with Liverpool,” although no specifics of the renewal were disclosed.
Despite enduring several injury setbacks in recent seasons, Alisson continues to be a crucial component of Arne Slot’s team, maintaining his No. 1 position even after the signing of Giorgi Mamardashvili last summer.
The Brazilian has previously suggested he intends to return to his homeland before hanging up his boots, with a switch back to Internacional – where he launched his career – very much on his mind.
“I talk to athletes who have made this move to return, some have had good experiences, others not,” Alisson said last summer. “Each one will have their own experience, but I want to return, especially to Inter. I don’t know when it will happen, but I still want to do it at a high level. That’s what I have planned.”
Alisson is again regarded as uncertain for Liverpool’s forthcoming fixture against Tottenham on Sunday, having sustained another hamstring issue during training which resulted in him being absent for the Champions League journey to Galatasaray.
Slot has nevertheless expressed optimism about his prospects of featuring at some stage over the coming days, with the goalkeeper having been anticipated to rejoin his colleagues in training.
