UK seaside town set for major £1.1m boost ahead of the summer | UK | News
A UK seaside town is set for a major boost ahead of the summer months. It will benefit from a new £1.1million attraction as part of a wider investment project.
Cliftonville, in Kent, is often referred to as the “hip” district of Margate, with a number of trendy record shops and cafes. It is set to benefit further by the addition of a £1.1million skatepark designed by Betabong Limited. The new attraction will be built on disused land on the seafront which will give skateboarders stunning views of the coastline.
As reported by Time Out, the acre of land previously housed a crazy golf course but will now be used for a skatepark. Thanet District Council has confirmed the plans which also include a kiosk and toilets.
Bob Porter, Director of Place at Thanet District Council, said: “As someone who is passionate about creating spaces where our young people can thrive, build connections and get active, I know how valuable this will be to the Margate community.
“This isn’t just about rails and ramps. It’s about building a space where people of all ages can come together, strengthen relationships, gain skills, and feel proud of their local area. I can’t wait to see the designs and hear what our residents think.”
The new addition is part of the wider Margate Town Deal worth a whopping £22.2 million. The investment project was confirmed in 2021 and is expected to be finished by 2027.
Of the £1.1million cost for the skatepark, £750,000 in funding came from the deal with an extra £175,000 added during a council meeting. As well as the skatepark, the Margate Town Deal will see money will be spent on improving Walpole Bay andreopening the Margate Theatre Royal and Margate Winter Gardens.
Betabong’s director Darren Nobbs said: “As a team of lifelong skaters, we’re pleased to be building the new park on the site of the former DIY skatepark, working closely alongside a strong local scene. Once built, the new concrete skatepark will be one of the UK’s best, set in a beautiful location overlooking the waterfront.
“The concept design includes a range of street and transition-focused elements across a vast site, to provide something for everyone.”
