‘Most engrossing drama of 2026’ arrives on ITV – ‘can’t stop watching’ | UK | News
A new series hailed as a “true nail biter” is streaming for free in the UK. Gone premiered on ITV1 and ITVX on March 8, and tells the story of Michael (David Morrissey), an impassive headmaster at a prestigious private school who reports his wife Alana (Emma Appleton) missing.
But Detective Annie Cassidy (Eve Myles) soon begins to suspect Michael is hiding something. Guardian reviewer Sarah Dempster hailed the series, writing: “If there is a tauter, clammier or more engrossing drama this year I will eat my mortarboard with chips.” Fans have taken to IMDb to praise the drama, with one fan saying it may not grab you straight away, but is well worth persisting with.
“Great plot, great acting particularly from David Morrissey, he captures grief, bewilderment, depression and guilt in his acting, totally engrossing acting, well done,” they said.
“This programme may seem slow to start but it builds into a truly believable story and dwells on real life drama, secrets within families and how differant personalities can be affected by social influences.”
Another, who gave it a 9/10, wrote: “The acting of the two lead actors in this series is superb. Have seen previous shows both have been involved in. Have great respect for both.
“The plot is not that unusual but there are loads of good twists. It was hard to stop watching and I ended up binge watching it.
“The rest of the cast are also quite good and overall I found it quite compelling and enjoyable. Highly recommend it.”
Another gave it a perfect score, calling it a “true nail biter, a stomach twister”.
“Acting, cinematography and directing are all superb. Not disappointed in the least. Began watching and was immediately engrossed by the storyline and the tension.”
The episodes have 12 and 15 certificates and the series contains upsetting scenes, domestic abuse, references to suicide & sexual harassment, and strong language – so viewer discretion is advised.
Gone is streaming now on ITVX.
