The film in question is L.A. Confidential. It holds an impressive 99% score on Rotten Tomatoes, along with a 94% audience rating, and many viewers still rate it as one of the best films ever made.

One person wrote in a review on IMDb: “It is, without a doubt, the best film of the 1990s, and quite possibly one of the best films ever made. As with any great film, it all starts with the writing.

“The story is riveting, the dialogue is smart and quite funny, and the characters are written in three dimensions. The acting is phenomenal. I can’t find a negative thing to say about this film. It’s truly a masterpiece.”

Another added: “Best film ever made. It is a sprawling epic tale of crime, corruption and justice in Hollywood and the LAPD, with a cast to match.

“A truly gripping crime saga exposing the seedy underbelly of the City of Angels, where cops never let the truth get in the way of justice, and everyone knows everyone else’s dirty secrets.”

A third wrote: “A masterpiece in every respect. It stands as a shining testament to the neo-noir genre, meticulously weaving a labyrinthine plot that captures the underbelly of 1950s Los Angeles with exceptional finesse.”

Someone else commented: “Not only the best Neo-Noir film ever made, but it’s also a modern classic and one of my absolute favourite movies. Acting is particularly impressive, and many of the actors do their career’s best performances.”

Released in 1997, L.A. Confidential is a neo-noir crime thriller directed by Curtis Hanson and based on the novel by James Ellroy.

The film follows a group of LAPD officers in 1950s Los Angeles as they become entangled in a complex web of crime, corruption and celebrity.

It went on to make more than $126million worldwide and has since been recognised as culturally and historically significant, even being selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.

More than 25 years on, it’s still widely regarded as one of the best crime films ever made.
