Met Office issues 18-hour power cut warning for 57 areas on Saturday – full list | Weather | News

The Met Office has issued weather warnings for 57 areas throughout the UK for the busy Easter weekend travel period. The new yellow warnings for wind are in place for 18 hours from 6pm on Saturday (March 4) until 12pm on Sunday (March 5).

The Met Office said peak winds of 50-60 mph will be possible fairly widely, with 60-70 mph in more exposed locations. Gusts could even reach 80-90 mph across parts of Scotland. The warnings state: A rapidly deepening area of low pressure is likely to move northeastwards close to or across northwestern parts of the UK during Saturday evening and night, clearing to the North Sea by Sunday. Whilst there is some uncertainty over the exact track, intensity and shape of this area of low pressure, a period of strong west to southwesterly winds is expected during Saturday night and into the first part of Easter Sunday, before gradually easing through the day. Peak gusts of 50-60 mph will be possible fairly widely, with 60-70 mph in more exposed locations. There is a slight chance of some very strong winds across parts of Scotland, particularly in the west, where gusts of 80-90 mph may be possible in exposed areas for a time.

Those in the impacted areas have been warned that some delays road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely with cancellations of services also possible.

There is a “slight chance” of power cuts occurring with potential to impact other services, such as mobile phone coverage.

Damage to buildings is also possible, such as tiles being blown off roofs, while there is a “small chance” that injuries could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties.
