Millions of Britons will see their council tax bills rise from today, Wednesday (April 1) – use our calculator to work out how much you’ll be paying. Increases for the new financial year (2026/2027) have been finalised across England, with all 153 top-tier local authorities confirming how much bills will rise by.

Council tax policy differs between England the devolved governments of the UK. In England, uthorities can raise tax by up to 4.99% without a local referendum. And while most have opted for increases at or near this level, a small number have announced lower increases, and seven councils have been granted special permission to exceed the cap.

These include Trafford, Warrington and Windsor and Maidenhead which have approved increases of around 7.5%, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council (around 6.74%), and North Somerset, Shropshire and Worcestershire, each which has approved rises of up to 8.99%.

However, almost of fifth of authorities chose to raise the levy by less than the maximum.

At the other end of the scale, bills in Hartlepool, have risen by just 1.98%, one of the lowest increases across England.

Other lower rises include 1.99% in Durham and around 2% in a number of London boroughs, like Westminster and Wandsworth.

Most county councils, metropolitan boroughs and unitary authorities have opted for 4.99% rises. This is largely the case in London too, with a handful of exceptions.
