Liverpool make Arne Slot sack decision after boss’ private admission | Football | Sport
Arne Slot remains convinced he will turn Liverpool’s fortunes around, with Anfield chiefs firmly supporting their manager. The Dutchman is just 12 months on from securing Liverpool’s 20th Premier League title, during what was his inaugural campaign on Merseyside.
However, following transfer spend exceeding £400million in the summer window, expectations were that the Reds would mount a formidable challenge to reclaim the league title. But that hasn’t materialised, with Liverpool sitting 21 points adrift of leaders Arsenal and engaged in a battle to secure Champions League qualification next season.
There has additionally been fierce criticism surrounding the displays of Slot’s side this term, and they were jeered loudly following a draw with Tottenham at Anfield last month.
This has all led to speculation about Slot’s future at the club, especially if this season ends poorly.
But The Times claim that the Liverpool hierarchy, including the club’s Sporting Director Richard Hughes and FSG’s Head of Football Michael Edwards, continue to back the manager.
It is understood that numerous factors beyond the manager’s influence have conspired against him this season.
Liverpool invested heavily in Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike, but the trio have featured together for less than 90 minutes throughout the entire campaign.
Wirtz has encountered difficulties with his performances during his debut season in English football, while Isak sustained a broken leg in December.
Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong were similarly brought in during the summer, but haven’t fulfilled their potential yet.
There have also been periods without Alisson between the posts, while Conor Bradley, identified as Trent Alexander-Arnold’s successor, has been absent for most of the season.
The tragic death of Diogo Jota last summer has also, understandably, left a profound effect on the squad.
Despite all of these challenges, FSG wish to afford Slot the opportunity to correct the mistakes of 25/26 and believe that he will come through stronger for them. Slot himself is equally assured he will halt the decline, privately informing friends that he remains convinced he can reverse the situation.
Nonetheless, Slot requires a strong finish to the season to maintain supporters’ backing and faces a crucial month across three competitions.
