Alcaraz shows his class as star makes retirement claim | Tennis | Sport
Day three of the Monte Carlo Masters will soon be under way, with plenty of drama served up on day two of the tournament. Former champion Andrey Rublev battled through an injury scare to advance to the second round. However, three-time champion Stefanos Tsitsipas suffered his first-ever opening-round defeat in Monaco, falling to Francisco Cerundolo. The Argentine’s brother, Juan Manuel Cerundolo, entered the draw as a lucky loser and had home favourite Valentin Vacherot a set and a break down, before Vacherot stormed back to win 12 of the last 13 games to secure his place in round two.
Several former top-10 players are also making their farewell appearances at the Monte Carlo Country Club. Frenchman Gael Monfils safely progressed to round two, while David Goffin was beaten in his opening match, with World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz emerging courtside to applaud the Belgian off the court. Meanwhile, 2014 champion Stan Wawrinka also bowed out in round one, before bidding farewell to the Principality and making retirement claims.
His conqueror, Sebastian Baez, will now face reigning champion Alcaraz in the second round. Recent Miami Open runner-up Jiri Lehecka also claimed victory in his opening match on Monday, while teenage sensation Joao Fonseca made a triumphant debut at the tournament.
